Football Behind Him, His Goal Is Playing a Boston
Jim Kennedy, CEO of Feed The World Inc., Atlanta, GA
Boston GP 178
We know that hindsight is always 20-20. In the case of Jim Kennedy, one of his biggest regrets is abandoning piano lessons for something ... ahem ... cooler, many years ago. "I used to play piano when I was young, but I gave it up in junior high to play football," Mr. Kennedy chuckles. "I thought playing the piano wasn't cool back then. But, boy, I wish I could play now."
Older (he has four grandchildren, six to 17 years old) ... and admittedly wiser ... Mr. Kennedy is making up for lost time with the help of James Schneider, manager of Steinway Piano Galleries in Atlanta. "I met Mr. Kennedy during a weekend of
Steinway & Sons' 150th anniversary-celebration events last year," recalls James. "He had recently built a new home with a large music room and was interested in purchasing a grand piano for it."
During that weekend, Mr. Kennedy learned of Steinway design features found in Boston
pianos from Joe Bisceglie - former manager of technical services at Steinway's New York factory for more than 30 years. It was all he needed to decide that a Boston was the best fit for his needs. Then came the process of selecting the appropriate model. "I suggested Boston's 5-foot-10-inch grand piano (GP178) for Mr. Kennedy's music room," recalls James, who thought the piano's size would be ideal for the space, while providing the full sound of a parlor grand.
Taking James' recommendations into consideration, Mr. Kennedy invested in the Boston
grand with a polished ebony finish. As a result, his music room has taken on a grand appearance ... in more ways than one.
A devout Christian, Mr. Kennedy crowned the cathedral ceiling of his music room with a mural depicting the hands of God. Portraits of Christ hang on the walls. And while his music room certainly is enlightened, Mr. Kennedy still hasn't enlightened himself on the
finer points of being a pianist. "I have yet to learn to play the piano," jokes Mr. Kennedy, adding that the Boston grand has gotten use from his grandchildren, who enjoy playing
when they visit. "However, they take after their granddad because they don't take lessons either. But I really want to start."
This time around, however, Mr. Kennedy has a more compelling reason for putting off his musical education. As a successful businessman, he is president of a home-building company, vice-president of a land-development firm, and chief executive officer of Feed The World Inc. maker of fine China emblazoned with biblical quotes. "Of course I'm busy, but I have made it my goal to play classical and spiritual music within the next year," he says. Then with a smile, he adds, "My football career ended in high school, but I have no excuse not to return to the piano for the rest of my life." (Boston Newsletter Winter/Spring 2005)
